Like 9/11, some of us remember where we were the day Princess Diana died. I was up in North England, when the first words I heard on my radio alarm clock were: “Princess Diana is dead.” It was a shocking time with many tears shed. The outpouring of grief worldwide was monumental.

It’s important to note that I have never been a monarchist, but it was different with Diana. I admired her style and work greatly, and felt disappointed with the way she had been treated by the rest of the Royals. With her demise, I completely detached myself from thinking about the Royal Family. I told everyone I wasn’t a monarchist anymore.

However, over the years since 1997, I saw a change in the way the Queen conducted herself. She began to ingratiate herself into public life. We saw her humorous side in TV appearances such as in the 2012 Olympics. She began to relax in front of the camera, and became more of a national grandmother. Her traditional Christmas messages became more personal and relatable. My family and I always looked forward to the Queen’s reflective Christmas messages. During the darkness of Covid-19, she addressed the United Kingdom in April 2020, reassuring the British public…
