Look at that sky and the skyline. A view of Manhattan that’s a local secret (credit: Monica Ray)

I debated whether to give this insider secret away. In the end, I decided to be kind and open.

Imagine breaking away from the throngs of people at Seaport Boulevard or the Brooklyn Bridge Carousel, all clamoring for a perfect social media photograph? Do you want to deal with the aggression and long lines, just to get that perfect shot where millions have stood before you? What’s so special about that?

When you’re at the usual sights in New York, do you ever wonder where the locals are hanging out? Where they enjoy the same coveted views but at a slower pace?

If it’s a sunny day and you have no other plans, spend it in Long Island City. Check the sunset time online and take the ferry from Wall Street. Alternatively, get off at Vernon Blvd-Jackson Av on the 7 and walk towards the East River.

I forgot how magnificent the Manhattan skyline was from this side of the water. I tried to just take it in without devices, but I couldn’t resist snapping the above photo, and more.

There are a few food trucks around Center Boulevard and 50th Avenue, and they do a good job of satiating those visiting the area, but it still felt calmer than similar spots in Manhattan.
