Benefits of following a New Years resolution

In an article I published in February 2023, I had described my first Zumba class in years. You can read all about it below.

I was terribly nervous, since I hadn’t done a group class in a while, let alone a high-intensity one! But I survived it, and burned a whopping 486 calories in 53 minutes. I was over the moon.

Every Friday morning, women and men from all walks of life and with rich tapestries of personal experiences descend upon this class, led by a highly energetic instructor.

The repertoire ranges from the Gypsy Kings to Bad Bunny. Some, like me, have signed up for the whole shebang. Others drop in when it suits them. Everyone has the same shared goal: to get healthy while having fun.

What have I gained from 3 months of Zumba

My level of fitness

I wasn’t completely unfit but I was no triathlete either. However, this weekly class has kicked my backside and muscles I didn’t know existed. I feel stronger than ever. I see muscle definition and there is a spring in my step. The biggest revelation has been my resting heartbeat. I was shocked to see it in the 50s range as you can see in the image above — possible evidence that I was getting physically fitter?

Structure and its connection to Medium

I know that I have to make it to class every Friday, rain or shine. This structure has made me more disciplined in my personal life, and in my writing practice. Before I had joined Medium, I wrote sporadically, if at all. Now, regardless of the monetary gain, I just love the idea of writing, and write most days. I think my Zumba lessons have played a big part in this.

Connections

Even though I’ve only been in this class for 3 months, I have met some friendly regulars. I’ve met some interesting people, including an 87 year old man whose level of fitness and attitude have astounded me.

If I am able to Zumba in my 80s, I’d call myself a winner in life! Going to such classes regularly…
